That Heaven Bears.
By Dinaw Mengestu
This was the book up for discussion this evening at the library. It was a wonderful discussion but that usually just means I talked too much. A good read, the author isn't earth shattering but good. He structured the storyline more creatively than is traditional, it could have backfired, but didn't. Instead it set off well the important events and memories. I won't go into too much... it is about an immigrant from Ethiopia. It is a story that leaves you feeling good in the end, you should read it.
It made me think about the importance of family and familiarity. Hopefully an immigrant would not take offense when, as a rather comfortable American, I say I empathize with the longing for familiar.
"Through a round aperture I saw appear,
Some of the beautiful things that Heaven bears,
Where we came forth, and once more saw the stars."
